About the Gala

The Embassy of Barbados in partnership with Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. and the Barbados Association of Washington, DC is pleased to announce the culmination of a year long celebration of Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence with the Spirit of Barbados Gala, commemorating our past and celebrating our future. The Spirit of Barbados Gala is an opportunity to honour those who have made positive contributions to Barbados and the Caribbean Region, while highlighting and celebrating the uniqueness and best of the small but exceptional nation of Barbados. The event will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the Organization of American States in Washington DC.

Members of the diplomatic community, leaders from government, business and academia, and members of the Barbadian and Caribbean Diaspora will attend and participate in the Spirit of Barbados Gala. This year’s signature event will include international cuisine prepared by award winning chefs from Barbados, as well as live entertainment from renowned Barbadian and Caribbean artistes.

Gala Benefit

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and its hurricane relief efforts, as well as the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF) and its Student Program for Innovation in Science and Engineering (SPISE). The mission of the Foundation is to “assist with the diversification of the economies of the Caribbean Region by harnessing science and technology for economic development, and to help raise the standard of living”. SPISE provides a residential summer enrichment opportunity for high school students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Cilantro scented Grilled Shrimp, citrus glazed Chicken,

pulled Cockspur Rum drunken Oxtail Salad with caramelized Onions.


Cocktail Pairing


Bajan Rose – E.S.A. Field White Rum, lemon juice,

rosemary and black pepper syrup, rimmed with smoked rock salt.

ENTRÉE


Bajan marinated Pork** Loin with dehydrated ginger,

coconut & ginger accompanied with scotch bonnet and ginger sweet potato puree,

curry braised plantain cream, smoked beets, and spiced “tamarind ball” gelee.

**Pork can be replaced with Mahi Mahi on request

Cocktail Pairing


Velvet Assistance - Warm coconut milk, ginger and basil syrup, (non-alcoholic or with Cockspur Fine Rum).

DESSERT


Barbadian great cake square glazed with orange chocolate ganache,

spiced sugar dusted pumpkin fritter with bay leaf rum cream filling,

brown sugar caramelized pineapple in a ginger rum syrup finished with sorrel banks beer reduction.

Velvet Assistance - Bajan Gem - Cockspur Fine Rum, citrus infused sorrel/wild hibiscus and all spice syrup.
